Solid waste problem and its sustainable solution in Kathmandu valley

Solid waste is an inevitable byproduct of human activities. Actually it is defined as any unwanted or discarded material from residential, commercial, industrial, public service oriented institutions and agricultural activities that cause environmental problems may be termed as solid waste. Before few years solid waste was managed in the urban areas in the Kathmandu valley. In that time most of the waster were used as organic manure that is why the production level of soil of Kathmandu valley was one of the best in Nepal. However, the introduction of new materials changing the consumption patterns, especially in urban areas, have resulted in increasing volumes of waste and as a result breakdown of traditional system of waste management has been taken place. In many developing country like Nepal, urbanization, industrialization, change in living conditions, and fundamental increase in consumer’s habits in urban areas have created a rapid and steady rise in the production of solid wastes. So it is one of the alarming problems in the contest of public health because there are a lot of solid wastes everywhere I the street so different types of diseases can spread in the city at any time.
